Privacy and use

This site is a personal build log by Eduard Renger about the Caldercraft model of HMS Diana. Nothing is sold here, there are no accounts and there is no newsletter. Some technology is involved all the same, and this is what it does.

No cookies

This site sets no cookies and uses no Google Analytics or anything like it. That is why there is no cookie banner: there is nothing to accept.

One exception, and you set it yourself: if you choose to be excluded on the do not measure my own visits page, one value is stored in your browser for that. It stays on your own device and is never sent anywhere.

What is measured

For each page view one line is written down: the time, the domain, the page, the referring page, your browser’s user agent, your language setting, your screen width and the page title. Outgoing links, language switches, searches and questions to the shipyard are counted as events.

Your IP address is not stored. A key is derived from it, together with your user agent and a secret number that changes every day. That makes one visitor recognisable within a single day, but not across days, and the key cannot be turned back into an address. The lines are kept in a file outside the website that only I can read, and are deleted after twelve months.

Why this exists: I want to know which parts of the build log are read and where people get stuck, so I can improve those parts. Not to follow anyone around.

Ask the shipyard

If you ask a question on the Ask the shipyard page, this is what happens. The question goes to a Cloudflare server. There it first searches my own log and registers for matching excerpts, and those excerpts go, together with your question, to an AI language model running at Cloudflare. That model may answer only from those excerpts.

The question and the answer are kept for thirty days, so the same question need not be computed twice. The question is also recorded as an event in the statistics, so I can see where the log falls short. So do not type personal details into it.

The answer is composed automatically and can be wrong. Every answer says where it comes from. If something does not add up, the source is what counts, not the answer.

Who else is involved

The site runs on Cloudflare’s network (United States, with servers in Europe), which handles the traffic and runs the AI model. The email and the statistics are at ZXCS in the Netherlands. Both necessarily see the IP address of your visit, as every website does.

Text and photos

My own text and photos are licensed CC BY-NC 4.0. You may reuse them with attribution and not commercially, preferably with a link to the page they came from. The Admiralty draughts of the Artois class are public domain via the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. Caldercraft’s kit plans, the build manual and book pages are not on this site and may not be reproduced. Photos and text by other forum members have not been used. There is more about this on About this site.

No guarantee

This is a record of how I did it, not a manual checked by anyone else. Work with glue, paint, blackening solution and sharp tools at your own risk, and always read the manufacturer’s safety instructions.
