Emailing Cornwall and the cavel cleats

2 January 2025 · Problem and fix

Piet had a practical tip: anyone who bought the model from Cornwall Model Boats can send them an email explaining which drawings are missing, and there is a good chance they will send new ones. Anyone who bought directly from Jotika can contact caldercraft@jotika-ltd.com. I did indeed buy the model from Cornwall and have had replacement material from them once before. So they have been emailed again, in the hope that they can replace these drawings too.

The request for a photo of the drawings was mainly meant as a back-up, and because I already had questions about the belaying plan that I could no longer look up. I was working on the cavel cleats, the double cleats on the inside of the bulwark. The way they are in the model, it is impossible to belay a rope to them, so I wondered whether any rigging led to them at all. Without the belaying plan there is no way of finding out. I have now made them so that a rope can indeed be belayed to them. That has at least bought me some time.

Backer64 offered to ask a fellow countryman on Model Ship World, who has also built the Diana, for a photo of sheet 5 if Cornwall does not come through. I am keeping that in reserve. His second piece of advice: consider a cat, which guards books and plans without eating them.

Postscript, September 2026. The belaying plan is back, and the answer is yes: a heavy line runs to every cavel cleat. At the last carronade port the main brace, by the wheel the main sheet, in the waist the fore sheet and the spritsail sheet, and abaft the forecastle, on the half deck and on the quarterdeck the halliards of the three topsail yards. HMSFly (Ships of Scale) glued his cleats a millimetre clear of the bulwark because the rope will not pass round them otherwise; worth remembering when the masts go in.
