Compass and lantern

30 December 2021

Herby63 made his lamp and compasses from styrene; I had a go at tinkering myself first. Here the first little attempt at a compass. Quite pleased already. OK, to be fair, it’s attempt two. Attempt one failed miserably. The compass has to fit in the 6 mm deep cabinet, so it can’t be much more than 5 mm in diameter. I could barely find how others solve this, so it’s mostly trial and error. Now for number two.

And then the lantern. Hmm, I can’t get it any better than this. It’s made of photo paper with a small copper lid. I cut the square openings with a cutting plotter; cutting by hand was far too small. The lantern goes in the middle window, the compasses on either side. Because the top of the binnacle sits loose, they drop in from above. Pingu57 and Hans Groenenberg thought it turned out well, and for something this small that is reassuring.
