Ship's wheel on deck

13 December 2021 · Milestone

Since I hadn’t shown the end result yet, here are some photos of how the ship’s wheel is now actually fixed to the deck, rope and all. This time I also got out the good camera for once. That does help with the colours. All in all: two wheels with ten spokes each, two stanchions, the barrel with the tiller rope and the copper rim band, and apart from the brass wheel from the kit, all scratch-built.

The tiller rope runs over the barrel between the two wheels. Herby63 noticed the small cord around the top handles: that is how the helmsman feels when the rudder is amidships. Details like that finish it off.

Between the grating and the ship’s wheel the binnacle is still to come. And in front of the wheel I want to make a grating on either side, for the helmsman figure to stand on. The compliments on the forum were overwhelming. boris279 concluded that he can no longer use the supplied wheel for his Agamemnon either, and Mees Ippel remarked that the bar for the rest of the finishing is now set high. That’s true. That’s how it works on a forum.
