Copper rim band

5 December 2021

For the finishing touch I have put a copper rim band on the wheel. I don’t think that is historically correct. At least, the Victory and the USS Constitution don’t have them, not in copper at any rate. But it makes the wheel stand out that bit more on deck and gives it a somewhat classier look. Erik B understood the choice: just that finishing touch. The parts have now been in Osmo oil twice, so I can finally glue the whole thing together and lash it to the deck with rope.

Meanwhile I have also started on the binnacle. I’m scratch-building that from walnut too, because there’s nothing for it in the kit. Quite a job, because the walls come out at only 0.7 mm thick and some of the bars are only a millimetre wide. And that breaks quickly again. Oh well, plenty of wood, so it should work out in the end. Meanwhile the compliments for the ship’s wheel came pouring in; Pingu57 wanted to deliver a whole henhouse full of them.
