Build log · Phase 11, Ship's wheel and binnacle

An evening of getting nowhere

25 October 2021

The boxwood advice was acted on straight away. Building Mouse generously offered a small boxwood log, once rescued from the garden waste bin, and Stephan pointed out a German web shop with solid wood boards. That last one would make for a very large ship’s wheel. I’ll start small, and in the end managed to order something from Germany at edelholzverkauf. I’m very curious.

Meanwhile I simply carried on with the walnut. Now you may be thinking: only one spoke? Well, the wretched things are so small that they tend to break. And then getting them lined up opposite each other is a bit of a thing too. Not to mention making them look more or less alike. The spider’s web on paper under the wheel is meant to help line everything up, but even with that it doesn’t quite work yet.

Oh well, a pleasant evening of hobbying, learned a lot, but got nowhere. Still, I’m really pleased with the advice about boxwood and the like, because I fear the walnut really is less suitable. At least this way I get a few more chances.
