The first rim

23 October 2021 · How-to

No idea whether it comes across at all in the photo, but the ship’s wheel is making progress. The first rim is done. It is 1.3 mm thick and 1.7 mm wide and, once again, made from offcuts of walnut. The rim consists of ten equal segments, which is where the spokes will go later. I followed the method from the pdf Stephan pointed me to, to the letter. That really was a good tip.

The ten separate pieces are joined with two-part epoxy and glued to the faceplate with yellow glue. After that you can turn the whole thing round. A neater example of those segments is still to come, because yesterday I ‘was given’ a new lathe and new turning tools arrive on Tuesday. So a little more waiting. Along with the lathe, by the way, I also added a grinding disc (sanding disc), a new table saw, a cross-slide table and a new multitool in one go. If the wheel still doesn’t work out now, I’m out of ideas.

Since I won’t be carrying on until tomorrow, I have already removed the rim from the faceplate with a little water. Otherwise the glue dries too hard.
