King plank and thread for the caulking seams
Hans Groenenberg asked why I don’t simply glue the deck down after all and plank on top of it: the base is then nicely fixed and all you do is stick planks on. Honest answer: the reason for not laying the deck yet is plain laziness. I can get at it far better if I fit it later, and I think it will be fine. The bend required really is minimal.
I went back and reread my own build log and found on page 2 a splendid post by Hans (Kolderstok) about laying a deck. Based on that I have decided to start with a king plank down the middle and then follow a four-butt shift.
For the caulking I had used a splendid oil-based pencil on the gun deck. Unfortunately it has run out, and the shops are closed. So I am going to try it with thread 0.15 mm thick. Real caulking seams were 7 to 9 mm wide, so at 1:64 scale 0.15 mm works out exactly right. Hans Groenenberg remarked that thread between the planks used to be far more common and that it is being done again on Kolderstok’s Fluit. He would do it. That gave me the confidence to carry on with it.
