Pump system in place, but those posts next to the capstan

28 December 2019

The pump system is in place. Most of it is still dry-fitted and here and there the black needs touching up. Question for the forum: should this all be glued down completely, or is it meant to still be able to turn?

How the capstan works remains a mystery. The capstan on the upper deck is connected to the one on the gun deck, so perhaps only the one on the upper deck was used. So I think I will only fit the capstan bars on the upper deck.

Stephan felt something was not quite right with that capstan: the posts are in the way. In the photos he found (almost all of them of the Diana) there is a kind of iron railing around it instead of wooden posts, and that railing could of course be taken away. Incidentally, the drawing in The Anatomy of the Ship shows it the same way, with the posts right next to the capstan, but something removable does indeed seem logical to me. I think I could reproduce those iron posts. My post is still removable at the moment as well.

Jan confirmed it: to work the capstan (on two decks twice as many men can man it) and the pumps, things were indeed removed, from pillars right up to ladders. I still have to see how I am going to do that. In the end you cannot see any of it, so it is not very important, but nice to know how it worked. Possibly I will leave the pillars on the gun deck in place and only put the capstan bars in the capstan on the upper deck. I also saw models with a double capstan where it could only be turned on the upper deck, so that on the lower deck they did not have to keep stepping over the messenger.
