Red in the profiles of the mouldings

22 December 2018 · How-to

For the red line in the mouldings I popped into our local paint shop in Veenendaal. An ideal shop: they have everything in the way of hobby paint, and there’s a web shop as well (verfijndveenendaal.nl). I came back with three options:

  • a pot of red paint, with a size 0 brush;
  • a waterproof marker, quite fine;
  • an acrylic paint marker. Unfortunately not available in 1 mm, only in 1.5 mm.

On the test piece the acrylic marker actually worked best. It simply gets paint into the little profile of the moulding, which looks just slightly better than the waterproof marker. Hans explained why: an acrylic marker has a tip that barely deforms, if at all, which a brush does. A waterproof marker has that advantage too, but there you don’t have the choice of colours you want.

When I came to paint the real mouldings, I switched to the brush after all. The profiles turned out to be too deep for the marker, and the brush also gave a slightly neater result.

With that the red is in the mouldings of the transom and the galleries, and I can move on to the mouldings on the hull.
