Surgery on a white metal lady

17 December 2018 · How-to · Problem and fix

She may be made of white metal, but I did feel a little sorry for this lady after I had gone at her with some extra solder. Not a pretty sight.

After the operation she looks a lot better. She also looks a good deal happier straight away, it seems. It went as Piet said: build up the solder and shape it with a small file. She remains a one-armed bandit, as Jaques remarked, but I’m pleased with her. Piet later said that repairing something yourself usually feels better than simply ordering a new part, and solder does indeed shape nicely.

Bling or wash

Then a question for the forum after all. I’ve once again aged the figure with a wash. The first photo is the bling version without wash, the second after the wash and a few attempts at drybrushing. Honestly, I preferred the right-hand one. Hans, Jaques and Piet thought so too, although Piet didn’t think the difference was great. Pingu57 also chose the right and suggested perhaps giving the left one an extra wash.

I also wanted to know whether I could still clean the first one and try again. That turned out to be possible. After some restoration work on the left-hand figure I’m happier with it. The sequence: first a good scrub, then a few very thin coats of yellow ochre, then a few thin coats of antique gold, then a subtle wash and finally drybrushing with antique gold.
