The first moulding: yellow ochre, or is it orange

14 December 2018

The first moulding is on. The colour is supposed to be yellow ochre. I’m a little colour-blind myself, but I still find it fairly orange. I don’t have another colour, and gold doesn’t seem to be the intention here either. I’ll wait for the end result, it will probably look fine then.

I shortened the walnut surround slightly so the moulding runs all the way through. I’m using the manufacturer’s cast mouldings, although it takes me a good half hour per moulding to get it looking halfway decent. But they’re reasonably neat now.

Piet found it hard to judge from the photo whether the colour was right. His advice: with Admiralty yellow ochre, two to three thin coats give the best effect, so don’t try to get it covering in one go. The metal ornaments and mouldings are best given one thin coat of primer first. I didn’t use primer, but I did apply three or four thin coats.

For the ornaments I’m still going to experiment with gold. Unfortunately the how-to for painting gold ornaments on the forum was never finished. The how-to for figures on the other forum is very helpful, but the gold remains a question. Yellow ochre really seems too orange to me for the ornaments, and I don’t have Naples yellow.

I can’t wait for the holidays, then I’ll hopefully make faster progress. At the moment it’s odd hours in the evenings and at weekends.
