A stealer at the sternpost

24 May 2018 · How-to

Needed a stealer at the sternpost after all. Either I’ve tapered too much, or the upward twist made it unavoidable. It was tricky, because at the end it needs a sharp bend and the strip above it then has to fit exactly again.

The order this time was different from what you’d expect. I glued the stealer first and only then the strip above it, but I did dry fit that real strip first to measure things up and determine the shape of the stealer. I was afraid that if I glued the strip first, the stealer would no longer fit properly between them. So: fit the strip, cut and glue the stealer, glue the strip.

With the first planking in March I had managed with a single stealer on the first side. With the second layer, where I taper consistently to avoid sliver planks, that turns out not to be enough. After this the yard stood idle for a few months. It was September before I got back to the planking.
