Inner bulwark and an upper deck that won't fit

24 September 2017 · Milestone · Problem and fix

The gun deck is finally finished and in the ship. How that went, with a deck that snapped in two when I put it back in, is in the story about the deck planking. Piet thought it a pity about the difference in texture and colour between the two halves. A little oil works wonders there.

Today, on with the inner bulwark. Made a small mistake there: I didn’t watch the line of the bulwark and there is now a slight kink at bulkhead 13. Nothing to be done about it now. I’ll sort it out on the outside.

By the end of the afternoon the inner bulwark was on. Now to coat the outsides with diluted PVA glue. That is said to help against splintering when cutting the gunports.

Oops, problem. I tried to fit the upper deck and saw that the foremost piece of my stern framing had gone completely askew. Beyond repair, I feared. Can I move the notch in the upper deck slightly without too much trouble, or will that cause me problems later?

Before anyone could reply, it was solved. It turned out I had made the inner bulwark slightly too long, which pushed the last bulkhead outwards. The bulwark was easy to shorten and after that the deck did fit. Not so bad after all, then.
