Stern frames 26 and 27 stick out

20 March 2017 · Problem and fix

Still found some time to tinker at the stern, and something odd is going on there. In Piet’s photo the angle of stern frames 26 and 27 runs neatly into the angle of the bulkhead. When I put my parts 26 and 27 on, they stick out a fair way. Even at the angle Piet used they would still stick out. Adjusting the angle of the stern frames themselves didn’t seem a good idea to me, because of the angle of the keel former. So is it best to build up the aftermost bulkhead slightly and file it flush with 26 and 27? Or am I missing something? Why the numbers are the other way round on Piet’s build, I don’t understand either.

Peter left the details to Piet, who knows the ship far better, but reminded me that a wooden model boat never fits first time: many parts need adjusting and everyone has their own way of building. I had already noticed that. The ‘annoying’ thing for me is that there are always several ways to adjust something. To avoid picking the wrong one and finding other parts don’t fit later on, I prefer to check first whether there is a wrong way. If not, I just choose.

Hans Groenenberg asked whether I didn’t have a section drawing, and what the instruction manual says. It seemed to him that 26 and 27 should be adjusted; such pieces are usually a bit taller, precisely so that you can fit them. What a good tip, I hadn’t thought of the drawing. On it I also see, by the way, that bulkhead 15 doesn’t touch the dotted line of the planking at all. Strange. And you can see that part 27 can never fit once bulkhead 17 has been faired slightly. So adjust after all.

Done! In the end I built up the aftermost bulkhead slightly after all, otherwise the curve was getting far too sharp. Hans thought it nicely solved and nobody will ever see it once it’s planked. So did I. Until the next morning.
